Paul Jorgensen, Flathead High cross country coach was named National Boys' Cross Country Coach of the Year @ the National High School Athletic Assn. convention in Colorado Springs CO.  The Flathead boys have won 11 state Class AA championships under Jorgensen's watch. The Braves have been nationally ranked 4 times, holding the #2 position in 2000    WHITEFISH LAKE RUN - June 28th  Brooke Andrus (Bigfork MT) wins women's 5K...Dan Bigham was overall 5K winner...Mary Thane (Missoula MT) won women's 10K...Seth Watkins (Kalispell MT) 1st in mens' 10K    MISC - The Columbia Falls MT Chamber of Commerce 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament takes place July 26th. Registration deadline July 21st...Call the C-Falls Chamber of Commerce @ 892-2072    PRO FOOTBALL - The Atlanta Falcons have signed former University of Montana defensive end Kroy Biermann, their fifth-round pick in last April's NFL Draft, to a 4-year deal. Terms were not released. Biermann, of Hardin MT, had 32 career sacks and 220 tackles as a Grizzly    COLLEGE FOOTBALL - John Laidet, most recently a redshirt defensive lineman @ The University of Oregon of the Pacific Ten Conference, is transferring to Montana State University in Bozeman MT. Laidet was named the 2006 Oregon Class 2A defensive player of the year after leading his team to an 11-2 record and a trip to the state championship. Former Oregon backup quarterback Cody Kempt signed with the MSU Bobcats earlier in June    COACHING - Tim Severson was named new girls' softball coach @ Flathead High (Kalispell). Severson will succeed Dale Beerman, who resigned at the end of the season. Whitefish High's Derek Schulz was named Class A Boys' track & field Coach of the Year by the Montana Coaches Assn.   GOLF - Larry Iverson of Kalispell MT won the Montana State Golf Assn. Junior Championships @ Larchmont Golf Course in Missoula MT by 1 shot    COLUMBIA FALLS HIGH SCHOOL HALL OF FAME - 4 new names have been added...Michael Hader, Chase Fairbank, Chase Grilley & Sarah Marcille    COLLEGE FOOTBALL - From Bozeman MT...The Montana State football team will be playing on FieldTurf beginning this fall. FieldTurf is an artificial surface. MSU football has been playing on grass since 1893. The Bobcats open the season @ home vs. Adams State Aug. 30th. Montana State's 1984 National Championship football team has been the driving force behind raising the estimated $900,000 needed for the project . The turf is expected to be in place for games this fall    ACADEMICS - Columbia Falls High School had 32 student-athletes named Academic All-State in Montana for spring sports...those who earned a varsity letter while maintaining a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5    TWO BEAR MARATHON (Running) - Race organizers have added a half marathon in addition to the 'big' marathon. Both races are set for Sept. 21st (Sunday) to happen in and around Whitefish MT...both races will be limited to 300 runners each    FOOTBALL - The University of Montana athletics department says all 12 Grizzly football games will be televised live this fall, for the first time in 4 years. All 8 conference games will be TV'd by KPAX-TV and broadcast on Montana's News Station channels throughout Montana.   COACHING -  May 30th  Bigfork High School announces the hiring of 3 new head coaches...Hauna Trenerry (girls' soccer), Yvonne Peck (girls' volleyball), Mark Hanson (girls' basketball).   PRO FOOTBALL - Former University of Montana defensive back and punt returner Tuff Harris, a native of Colstrip MT, agreed to a 3-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. Harris will get to compete at the defensive safety position as well the punt return job.   MISC - The 7th Annual Columbia Falls High Wildcat Athletic Endowment Assn. Auction and BBQ is Friday, July 25th.  The 8th Annual Columbia Falls High Wildcat Athletic Endowment Assn. golf scramble is Sunday, July 27th @ the Glacier View Golf Club in West Glacier MT
