GOLF - July 3rd, 4th & 5th  72nd Annual 4th of July Tournament @ The Whitefish Lake Golf Club. Defending champions in the 54-hole event: Robb Bergeson (men) & Rachel Warren (women) both of Billings MT are returning.   COACHING - Pending school board approval, Flathead (Kalispell) High School has a new boys' soccer coach. Chris Putzler will succeed Eric Sawtelle.  Flathead High cross country coach Paul Jorgensen was named the National Boys' Cross Country Coach of the Year. The announcement came @ the National High School Athletic Coaches Assn. convention in Colorado Springs CO. The Flathead boys have won 11 state Class AA championships under Jorgensen, the Braves also have been nationally ranked 4 times, holding #2 in 2000.   WHITEFISH LAKE RUN - June 28th  Brooke Andrus of Bigfork MT wins women's 5K...Dan Bigham was overall winner of 5K...Mary Thane (Missoula MT) won women's 10K...Seth Watkins (Kalispell MT) wins men's 10K.

PRO FOOTBALL - The Atlanta Falcons have signed former University of Montana defensive end Kroy Biermann, of Hardin MT, to a 4-year deal. Terms were not released. Biermann had 32 career quarterback sacks and 220 tackles over his Grizzly career. Biermann was Atlanta's fifth-round pick in last April's NFL Draft.   COLLEGE FOOTBALL - John Laidet, a defensive lineman most recently a redshirt @ the University of Oregon of the Pacific Ten Conference, is transferring to Montana State University in Bozeman MT. Laidet was the 2006 state of Oregon Class 2A defensive player of the year after leading his team to an 11-2 record and a trip to the state championship. Former Oregon backup quarterback Cody Kempt signed w/the MSU Bobcats earlier in June.

COACHING - Tim Severson has been named head girls softball coach @ Flathead High (Kalispell). Severson succeeds Dale Beerman, who resigned at the end of the season.   Whitefish High's Derek Schulz was named Class A Boys' track & field coach of the year by the Montana Coaches Assn.   RECRUTING - Flathead (Kalispell) High's Luke Fischer signs a letter of intent to play soccer @ Northwest University in Kirkland WA. Fischer was part of 2 state championship teams @ Flathead.   GOLF - Larry Iverson of Kalispell wins the Montana State Golf Assn. Junior Championships @ Larchmont Golf Course in Missoula MT by 1 shot.   COLUMBIA FALLS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME - 4 new names have been honored...Michael Hader, Chase Fairbank, Chase Grilley & Sarah Marcille.   COLLEGE FOOTBALL - From Bozeman MT...Bobcat Stadium where the Montana State University football team plays will play on FieldTurf this fall. FieldTurf is an artificial surface. MSU football has played on grass since 1893. The Bobcats first game on the new surface is Aug. 30th vs. Adams State. Montana State's 1984 National Championship football team has been the driving force behind raising the estimated $900,000 needed for the project.

ACADEMICS - Columbia Falls High School had 32 student-athletes named Academic All-State in Montana for spring sports...those who earn a varsity letter while maintaining a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5.   TWO BEAR MARATHON (RUNNING) - In addition to the marathon, race organizers have added a half marathon. Both races are set for Sept. 21st (Sunday) to take place in and around Whitefish MT. Both races are limited to 300 runners.   MISC - Columbia Falls MT Chamber of Commerce 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will take place July 26th. FOOTBALL - The University of Montana athletics department says all 12 Grizzly football games will be televised live this fall, for the first time in four years. All 8 Big Sky Conference games will be TV'd by KPAX-TV in Missoula and broadcast on Montana's News Station channels throughout Montana.

COACHING - May 30th  Bigfork High School announces hiring of 3 head coaches...Hauna Trenerry (girls' soccer), Yvonne Peck (girls' volleyball), Mark Hanson (girls' basketball). Bigfork High activities director Shannon Smith resigned his post accepting a teaching position @ Glacier (Kalispell) High.

PRO FOOTBALL - Former University of Montana defensive back and punt returner Tuff Harris, a native of Colstrip MT, agreed to a 3-year contract w/the New Orleans Saints. Harris spent his rookie season with the Miami Dolphins. The Saints will give Harris an opportunity to compete at the defensive safety position as well punt returner.   MISC - The 7th Annual Columbia Falls High Wildcat Athletic Endowment Assn.
